Photo shoot pictures in preparation for new release

This week Russell and I took a few photos to prep the website for a revamp while also having a few extra to put together with the EPK packet that we plan to put together soon. This EPK will be used to pitch the upcoming album to a few different record labels.

But anyhow, with no further ado… here are the few photos that I’ve taken the time to actually edit.

Random Friday Night Update

Thought I would drop in real quick with an update since I’ve got nothing better to do right now. I came down with a little bug and I took the day off from work. Since I am laid up in bed in my PJ’s with a fever and runny nose, I might as well post a quick little something.

Russell and I have been working really hard to get this project done. We only have one more vocal session left before we are done tracking. Because of this, I have started working on final edits on some of the songs that are done. By the time we sit down and do the final set of vocal takes, I will likely have a final mix down figured out for the album.

If we get the final session completed next week, I am hoping we will be ready to start pitching to record labels by the end of August. This means that we have a lot to do before that time. We will need to finalize album artwork, get some promo photos done, etc.

We have already locked down one album cover that we really like. And, we have picked out a few places around town to take some pictures.

Lots to do.

I am excited about this album and working with Russell.

Full length Album Update – Vocal Tracking

unnamed.jpg

So far Russell and I have knocked out two tracks with eight more to go.

We have set up a schedule that we hope to keep. If we managed to do so, we should have the record ready for final post edits and mastering by the end of August. I am really happy with how the first two songs have turned out. With the vocals done on those two tracks, the songs are finally coming to life.

We are both learning a lot about the recording process, and works best for the both of us. And, we are already talking out ideas for future projects.

With that said, and the likelihood of a release in the very near future, we have both also been discussing album artwork for the upcoming release. I have designed about half a dozen cover mock-ups so far. But, we haven’t settled on any particular one just yet. Once we are done with recording and have reached the mastering stage, we will likely start to crack down on which album artwork we intend to go with. Chances are, we will have quite a few more album cover concepts to pick from by then.

Other than all of that, things have been going pretty smooth. Russell and I have also gotten a chance to get to know each other outside of just sitting in the studio laying down tracks. He is a pretty cool dude. I definitely see myself partnering with him on future projects.

I am excited to knock this project out!

Album Pre-Vocal Post Edit Madness Complete

editings

Well, I just spent four hours working on pre-vocal post editing on the back end for this upcoming full length release. Since Russell came in to do some recording recently, I was able to do a final mix down on the one song that we did complete. As a result, I was able to come to a solid mix that I am really happy with for that one song. It has a lot more punch to it than my last EP, Ignorance is Woe.

Since that one song was at the final mix stage, I spent the last several hours transferring the mix settings from that song to all of the songs on the upcoming album. I am really happy with the guitar tones. The kick drum is nice and punchy, too.

Although Russell and I were able to crank out one song, we both agreed that we will be re-recording the vocals for that one when we come in to begin tackling the other songs. We learned a lot about the type of work flow that we will be using together during the recording process. Because of that, we both agreed that we think we can get some much stronger takes the second time around. I am really excited about it… which is why I am in here working on post edit back end stuff in the studio like a madman.

The vocalist has been found

That’s right… it’s official. The vocalist that I put the ad out for has been found. And in a random and yet surprisingly unexpected way. But first, let’s hash out how things went for the ad. I got probably a dozen responses, at least three or four of which were the same day that the flyer got posted. Of the people that reached out, all but one really understood what I was looking for.

Most everyone either skipped over the fact that I was looking for a screamer, not a “singer”. Or, they were looking to start a band… which is not at all what my ad even hinted at.

unnamed

I met with the one vocalist that understood. He was a really amazing dude. And, he was a perfect fit. A solid Christian. A lover of hardcore and deathcore. And… a jam-up screamer. However, in the process of preparing some tracks to send to him, Russell came along from left field (no Ad required).

So, here is the short and skinny version of how I met Russell and how he turned out to be the too good to be true, perfect fit for my current project.

When my wife and I moved in to our new home, as per usual, at least a few different neighbors are typically kind enough to step out and introduce themselves. The neighbor directly across the street from me turned out to be a married couple close to our age. They just so happened to be Christian as well, and even do home group bible study at their place on the regular.

Way cool.

While talking with the new neighbor about what my wife and I do, the studio project came up. And he said he had just the person I needed to meet. Turns out my neighbor had just the person to set me up with on a blind “seeking screamer” first date.

So, not only am I making friends with the new neighbors… but now I’m already making friends with the neighbors friends. And to top that there is a common thread of Christ and music in the mix.

Talk about random.

Russell is a cool dude. I can’t wait to start tracking with him (note: the pixilated grainy photo is of Russell is from a video he sent me displaying some of his mids and lows).
