Writing Vocals for the first time in 7 Years

Well, now that the rhythm section for all three songs in my upcoming EP are finished, all I have left to record is vocals and lead guitar. After that comes the hard part; mixing and mastering. With that, I have finally begun to sit down and write lyrics for the first time in 7 years. It’s crazy to think that the last album I released was such a long time ago.

For this three song EP I have decided to do something similar to what I did with the last record, Mother of Harlots. With that record I pulled my lyrical inspiration from the book of Revelations. This time around, I have decided to pull my lyrical inspiration from the Psalms.

With the Psalms you can go anywhere. You can pluck from the verses that speak of God’s love and mercy. Or you can go the other way and pluck from the verses that focus on the wrath of God upon the unrepentant wickedness in the world. So far I have most of the lyrics put together for two of the songs. I am hoping to being testing out my new Shure Mic this next week.

If I can manage to keep the pace that I have had so far, I am hoping to have the EP ready for the mixing phase by the end of February at the very latest (and that is being generous on time). I will more than likely be ready for the mixing phase closer to the end of January if I keep working at it like I have been.

A Message to Myself from the Future

So, I randomly came across this video by a musician artist, Chords of Orion. This video starts out with him saying, “if you aren’t an old fart musician like me… you will be soon“. The fact that he splashes in the Historic Christian message was kind of freaky. It’s as if this is 45 year old me sending me a message from the future or something. It was too ironic not to share. We even dress the same…

Rhythm section for first song complete

The three song EP is under way. Although the stuff I am writing isn’t ground breaking, I am having a lot of fun with it. The rhythm section for one song is laid down. I have a friend currently writing some sweeps for the song while I work on writing and recording the second and third song.

On the horizon for A Martyr’s Oath?

With the New Year only a few weeks away a few people have asked me what to expect with the new project next year. Well, now that the studio has been up and going for a bit now, I have become fairly proficient with Cubase 9.5. That in no way indicates that I’m a master at it. Not even close.

What you can expect from me between now and the summer of 2019 is the following. I plan to start blogging more regularly about silly things like music, faith, and politics. It’s not that any of that stuff is relevant to A Martyr’s Oath as a project. But, I enjoy posting about the things that interest me.

As for recording, I feel that I have become familiar enough with the recording software now. With that, my intention with the New Year is going to be to record a three song EP that will be pitched to a few indie Deathcore Labels for release in the summer of 2019. I already have the bones of two songs written. I just need to sit down, refine the songs, and spend time recording a final take for each of those songs. This leaves me with only one song left to do for the final EP. My goal is to have the EP completed by April. This will give me a few months to pitch the EP to various labels before it gets released that summer.
